Behind every Aging Life Care Manager® is a commitment to guiding older adults through the complexities of aging, offering thoughtful support, deep empathy, and an unyielding drive to enhance their quality of life. In a world where the challenges of aging can feel overwhelming, these professionals serve as steady anchors for families and individuals alike. But what does it really take to be an Aging Life Care Manager?
This May, in honor of Aging Life Care™ Month, we’re pulling back the curtain on the daily lives of these remarkable professionals. Through the eyes of those who live and breathe the role, we’ll explore the impactful work of our Aging Life Care Managers and how their expertise brings peace of mind, stability, and dignity to the aging journey.
What does an Aging Life Care Manager do?
Aging Life Care Managers serve as a central point of contact in an often-fragmented care system. They coordinate services, communicate with professionals, and provide guidance to families—all while keeping the client’s well-being at the center.
Sarah Nudel, Windward’s Director of Clinical Services, shared how she navigates complex care dynamics: “Consistent communication is so important. Even in challenging situations, I make sure to share our plan and next steps. It helps everyone involved feel more hopeful and supported.”
By fostering collaboration and clarity, Aging Life Care Managers ensure that everyone—from doctors to family members—is informed and aligned.
The emotional side of the work
The professional expertise required for care management is only part of the role. Aging Life Care Managers also offer emotional steadiness during some of life’s most vulnerable moments.
“Perspective and empathy are my two favorite words,” Sarah said. “Not every situation has a simple fix, but when I remind myself what our clients are going through, it helps me meet them with patience and compassion—especially when emotions are running high.”
This ability to stay grounded and present is often what clients and families remember most. It’s not just about logistics; it’s about being there.
Creating change—one client at a time
The work of Aging Life Care Managers often results in meaningful, long-term change for the people they serve. Heather Arsenault, a Windward Aging Life Care Manager, recalled supporting a woman in her early sixties who had been living in a partially flooded home. Heather quickly helped relocate her, secure a new place to live, furnish her new space, and coordinate caregiving support. “She’s so excited to be on her own again and thankful for all we did,” Heather said.
In another case, Heather worked with a single client for over seven years—driving him to appointments, managing transitions between care settings, helping with errands, and even celebrating holidays together. “He always thanked me after every visit,” she recalled. “I know I made a huge difference in his life.”
These relationships speak to the ongoing, personal nature of the work. Care plans may change, but the steady presence of a trusted guide can make all the difference.
The value of advocacy and support
For many clients—especially those without local family—having an Aging Life Care Manager provides a sense of stability.
“Having someone by your side to navigate the intricacies of aging is invaluable,” said Korie Almanza, another member of Windward’s Aging Life Care team. “It brings peace of mind, especially when there’s no nearby support system.”
Whether it’s coordinating care or simply being a familiar face, Aging Life Care Managers offer continuity that allows clients to age with dignity and autonomy.
What keeps them going
Despite the emotional and logistical complexity of the role, many Aging Life Care Managers are drawn to the work because of its deep sense of purpose.
For Korie, it’s all about helping people maintain their independence: “People want to age with dignity, and I do everything I can to support that. I’ve seen firsthand how much of a difference it makes.”
Kimberly Schwinn, Windward’s Nurse Care Manager, added, “I feel a great deal of appreciation from my clients, especially those with family far away. Even taking a small task off someone’s plate can bring real relief.”
It’s this human connection—combined with tangible impact—that keeps these professionals motivated day after day.
