5 Myths About Vascular Dementia Every Caregiver Should Know
September 1, 2025 | Alzheimer's and Other Dementias, Caregiving

When someone starts forgetting things or having trouble making decisions, many people think it might be Alzheimer’s disease. But there is another type of dementia that is often misunderstood: vascular dementia. Because its symptoms can look like other conditions, it is easy to get confused. Here are five common myths about vascular dementia and the facts that caregivers should know.
Myth #1: Vascular dementia is the same as Alzheimer’s disease.
Fact: These two conditions are both types of dementia, but they are not the same. Vascular dementia happens when blood flow to the brain is reduced, often after a stroke or because of damaged blood vessels. Alzheimer’s disease is caused by changes in brain cells and the buildup of abnormal proteins.
Myth #2: Only people who’ve had a major stroke get vascular dementia.
Fact: A major stroke can cause vascular dementia, but smaller “silent” strokes can also lead to it. Health problems like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetes can also raise the risk.
Myth #3: Memory loss is the only symptom.
Fact: Vascular dementia can affect more than just memory. People may have trouble focusing, making decisions, or solving problems. They might get confused more easily, struggle with planning, or feel irritable, sad, or withdrawn.
Myth #4: There’s nothing you can do after a diagnosis.
Fact: There is no cure, but there are still ways to help. Treating health problems like high blood pressure or diabetes can slow things down. Eating healthy food, moving your body, staying social, and doing brain-stimulating activities can also help. An early diagnosis gives families more time to plan and get the support they need.
Myth #5: All types of dementia progress the same way.
Fact: Vascular dementia often gets worse in steps. Someone might be doing fine for a while, then suddenly decline after a stroke or illness. This can be hard to predict. That is why regular check-ins and flexible care are so important.
